Shane Ray Jersey , Vic Fangio has spent 19 seasons as an NFL defensive coordinator starting with his stint as the first ever defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers. He was also the first ever defensive coordinator for the Houston Texans. That being said, I think there is much we can learn from not only how his defenses have performed, but from the production that he has gotten from his defensive players. Much like Wade Phillips, Vic Fangio, as a defensive coordinator likes to adapt his scheme to fit his players, not the other way around. He should be able to get the most out of Von Miller, Bradley Chubb, Derek Wolfe and (even) Demarcus Walker. It is widely reported that the Broncos and Vic Fangio want Ed Donatell to the be defensive coordinator. That would make sense as Donatell has followed Fangio to San Fransisco and then to Chicago. For him to follow Fangio to Denver makes all the sense in the world. It also stands to reason that if Ed is running the defense then the defense will be the same defense that Vic would be running if he were the defensive coordinator. THis could end up with something like what Andy Reid does in KC where he is not the offensive coordinator, but he really is the offensive coordinator. For those who might remember the name, Ed Donatell, he was the defensive backs coach for the Broncos in 2009 and 2010. That 2010 defense was one of the worst in the history of the NFL (I’m not exaggerating, I remember writing about this back in 2010 when I was just a reader and fanpost contributor here). Of course, Ed was also our DB coach for five years in the late 90s including for our back-to-back Super Bowl winning teams. So how have Fangio’s defenses done statistically during his 19 seasons as a defensive coordinator. Here is a table that is pulled directly from pro-football-reference.com.Firstly, there is plenty to digest in this table. Focus on the column labelled Pts. He has had five different stops: Carolina, Indianapolis, Houston, San Francisco and Chicago. He built a defense in Carolina through the expansion draft and the regular draft that was 8th in points allowed in its first season and 2nd in points allowed in its second season. The 1996 Panthers team made it to (and lost in) the NFC championship game. His defenses got progressively worse in his 3rd and 4th years in Carolina, finishing 13th in points in 1997 and 27th in points in 1998. After getting let go from the Panthers, Fangio landed the DC position with the Colts under Jim Mora. In 1999, the Colts defense was good enough to allow a young #1 draft pick QB by the name of Peyton Manning to the lead the team to a 13-3 record. That defense was good enough to allow the Colts to lose a heart-breaker to the Titans (19-16) in the divisional round. The Titans would go on to play in their one and only super bowl that year, losing a heart-breaker to the Rams. The Colts defense in 2000 was comparable to their 1999 defense, but the Colts would only finish 10-6 and lose in the wild card round to the Dolphins. The 2001 Colts defense was terrible, finishing second to last in past allowed. The Colts would finished 6-10 leading to the firing of Jim Mora and the loss of a DC job for Fangio. After Indy Fangio moved on to the Texans where he had the task of building the Texans defense from the ground up much like he had with the Panthers. However, he was not able to replicate the immediate success that he found with the Panthers defense. In fact his defenses in Houston never ranked better than 15th in points allowed and the Texans never finished better than 7-9 while he was the DC there. After finished 2-14 in the 2005 season, Dom Capers was fired as the head coach and Vic was again out of work. His next stop would take him to Baltimore where he would get to coach the linebackers and Ray Lewis in his prime. In his four years with the Ravens as LB coach, their defense would finish 1st, 22nd, 3rd and 3rd in points allowed and make the playoffs three out of four years. The one year they didn’t was the year the both Ed Reed and Ray Lewis got hurt. In 2010 Jim Harbaugh, whose brother John was on the coaching staff in Baltimore with Vic, would convince Vic to move with him to Northern California to be the defensive coordinator for the Stanford Cardinal (notice that is singular since it is a color, not a bird). That Stanford team would finish 12-1 overall Justin Simmons Jersey , 4th in the country and win both the Pac-10 and the Orange Bowl. Fangio would make very good use of an extremely intelligent tall CB named Richard Sherman who was very quick but not very fast. You might have heard of him. Other than Sherman, Fangio had very little in the way of NFL-level talent on his defense. Stanford would have only one other defensive player who played under Fangio drafted, Sione Fua, who spent some time with the Broncos. Jim Harbaugh would then get hired away by the 49ers and ask Vic to make the move with him back to the NFL. Fangio was the DC for the 49ers from 2011-2014. His defenses in San Francisco were great. The 49ers were 2nd, 2nd, 3rd and 10th in points allowed during Vic’s four seasons there. Those defenses were led by two dynamic ILBs in Navarro Bowman and Patrick Willis - both of whom were AllPro in 2011 and 2012. Bowman was named 1st team AllPro in 2013 as well. The 2014 defense that only finished 10th in points allowed had neither Bowman or Willis. The 2014 season would be the season where the 49ers locker room imploded forcing the firing of Jim Harbaugh and the loss of a job for Vic. So this brings us to Chicago where Vic was most recently as the defensive coordinator. His defenses were in the bottom third of the league in points allowed for the first two seasons in Chicago but then improved to 9th in 2017 and 1st overall in 2018. It definitely helped for the Bears to get overrated OLB, Khalil Mack from the Faiders, but Fangio had been doing a good job of developing the defensive talent that they have been drafting during the previous three seasons. From 2015-2018 the Bears did a good job of finding starters for their defense in the draft. In 2018, six of their 11 starters (7 of 12 if you count their CB3) on defense were drafted by the them (or signed as UDCFA and developed). The other starters were good free agent signings (Akiem Hicks, Danny Trevathan, Prince Amukamara) or via trade (Mack). It would appear to me that we can expect a return to dominant defense if history is to be our guide. I would also not be surprised (assuming Fangio has significant input into the draft) to see the Broncos using a high draft pick on a speedy ILB/MLB like Roquan Smith. Who are the best players available for the Denver Broncos on Day 2 of the 2019 NFL Draft? Christopher Hart updates his remaining Big Board and shares his thoughts."It’s never a dull moment covering the 2019 NFL Draft and the Denver Broncos made several moves on the first day that had all of Broncos Country at the edge of their seat. To start off their evening, they acquired an extra second-round selection (#52 overall) and a future third round selection from the Pittsburgh Steelers, who traded up for Michigan linebacker Devin Bush. After dropping own to the twentieth overall selection, the franchise selected high-profile tight end Noah Fant, giving them a dynamic weapon at the position they haven’t had in half a decade. (ICYMI — here is my scouting report on Fant.)After the first round was in the books, twenty-three prospects in my top thirty-two went in the first round. Six others who ended up going on the first day were ranked thirty-three through forty-two respectively, with only three players outside the the top fifty going in the first. So who are the best players from my board that still remain and which of them could be favorites to land with the Broncos tomorrow evening? Let’s take a look.Hart’s Best Players Available for Day 219. Jawaan Taylor, OT — FloridaThe reason Taylor is still available is simple — there are medical concerns with his knee according to various reports. I’m not big on taking prospects with injury risks high in the draft, so I’d hope the Broncos would pass on him given that issue.21. Byron Murphy, CB — WashingtonIf the Broncos somehow ended up with Murphy in the second round I’d be absolutely elated. He is a tremendous fit for Vic Fangio’s defense and is one of the ‘stickiest’ corners in the draft. When you factor in the Chris Harris Jr. situation — it’s quite clear Denver needs to find themselves another cornerback.23. Drew Lock, QB — MissouriI’m not too surprised that Lock slid out of the first round. His mechanics are a mess (especially his footwork) which has a negative impact on his overall accuracy. However, his potential and talent may be too good for the Broncos to pass up if he is on the clock at #41 overall. Kevin Hogan and Garrett Grayson aren’t quality back-up material and they aren’t guys you want starting at any point ever.24. Greedy Williams, CB — LSUWilliams isn’t the best fit for the Broncos’ defense, but you he has traits you can’t teach and if he puts it all together and improves upon his tackling he could be a quality boundary corner in the National Football League. Those are two big ifs but in the second round the risk is worth the reward.26. Dalton Risner, OL — Kansas StateThe Broncos like Risner and if available he would be an obvious choice for the franchise considering they have significant needs long-term on the interior. His ability to play four spots (everything but left tackle) only adds to his value. Don’t be surprised if he is one of the prospects Denver selects on Day 2.28. Nasir Adderley, S — DelawareWill Parks and Justin Simmons are both free agents after the end of next season. While I envision one of them receiving a contract extension, I’m not sure both do. Adderley is a ball-hawking defensive back who forces a lot of turnovers. He would be a dark horse pick for sure but a great value selection nevertheless.29. D.K. Metcalf, WR — Ole MissThe Broncos drafted Courtland Sutton and DaeSean Hamilton in last year’s draft and added a dynamic tight end in Fant to their roster yesterday evening. Could you imagine the Broncos’ offense with Metcalf added into the mix? Good luck to opposing secondaries if that happens.30. Cody Ford, OT — OklahomaMike Munchak is one of the best in the business at coaching up offensive lineman and Ford has a tremendous amount of athleticism for a man his size. His best fit might be at offensive guard and the Broncos do have a need there.32. Rock Ya-Sin, CB — TempleThe aforementioned Murphy and Williams are still available, but Ya-Sin is a rock solid corner who can compete for snaps immediately. His physicality and strong tackling line up with the aggressive attitude of Fangio’s defense. The Remainder of Hart’s Top 10035. Irv Smith Jr. Adam Gotsis Jersey , TE — Alabama39. A.J. PITTSBURGH (AP) —  on the Pittsburgh Steelers. The longtime head coach is not ruling it out either. The star wide receiver went radio silent in the days before the team’s regular-season finale against Cincinnati last Sunday Hines Ward Jersey , in essence abandoning the club in what Tomlin described as its “darkest hour.”Though Brown did make a cameo appearance on the sideline — rocking a fur coat — as the Steelers edged the Bengals , he vanished before the final gun and did not show up on Monday for exit interviews and to clear out his locker.Tomlin said Brown arrived at practice last Wednesday reporting discomfort in his lower body. The team gave Brown the day off, did so again on Thursday. On Friday, Tomlin sent Brown home to rest and suggested he get an MRI on the banged up knee.Tomlin did not hear from Brown on Saturday to get an update. When Drew Rosenhaus, Brown’s agent, reached out on Sunday morning to tell Tomlin that Brown was available to play, Tomlin “drew a line in the sand” and said Brown could best serve the Steelers by cheering on the sideline. While Tomlin demurred when asked during his season-ending news conference on Wednesday if Brown “quit,” the longtime head coach offered little in defense of the perennial Pro Bowler, whose historic production has become increasingly at odds with his erratic off-the-field behavior.“The bottom line is we were playing a significant game and he didn’t do a good enough job of communicating of being available in the hours leading up to that performance,” Tomlin said.“So we needed to make decisions pertinent to getting to play in that performance. So, I’ve been real clear at outlining what transpired Heath Miller Jersey , the level of communication, things of that nature. Obviously there are some things within that that you can infer, certainly.”Rather than spend time elaborating on how the Steelers went from 7-2-1 the week before Thanksgiving to 9-6-1 and missing the postseason for the first time since 2013 — a collapse Tomlin plans to “wallow” in over the next few weeks — he spent the majority of his time responding to questions about Brown. It’s nothing new. The 30-year-old is the only player in NFL history with six straight 100-catch seasons, but has become adept at drawing headlines for things that have nothing to do with football, be it livestreaming from the postgame locker room in Kansas City two years ago to threatening a reporter from ESPN on social media in September to suggesting on Twitter he should be traded .It hasn’t stopped. As Tomlin spoke, Brown — who has three years remaining on his four-year, $72 million extension he signed in the spring of 2017 — published a post on Instagram to his 3.1 million followers saying “I am divinely blessed with free will. I utilize that gift, choosing to take charge of my life.” Brown also appeared with former teammate James Harrison, who promised an exclusive “interview” with Brown.Tomlin has long had a policy of trying to tune out what his players say or do on social media, but admitted there’s a level of “disappointment” when it comes to Brown’s actions before adding it’s immaterial to his job.Asked if there’s a point with Brown or any player where the distractions can outweigh the on-the-field benefits, Tomlin said “certainly.”Whether the Steelers are at that point is unclear. Tomlin said the team has not received any “formal” trade requests from Brown’s camp.Tomlin declined to get into what punishment Brown may face in the future Louis Lipps Jersey , saying the club is still gathering information. Tomlin does believe that Brown was dealing with some type of injury, but added to his knowledge that Brown has not undergone the MRI.“Like we do in all circumstances, we will deal with it appropriately and deal with it in-house,” Tomlin said.Brown’s future status is just one of a number of questions the Steelers will face over the next few months, starting with the coaching staff. The defense and special teams both had critical missteps this season and offensive line coach Mike Munchak is in the mix for several open head coaching positions.“When you lack success, when you fail, change is a part of it,” Tomlin said. “We talk about it. As a staff we talk about it. As players, in exit meetings. That’s just our business.”So lately, has been addressing the perpetual drama surrounding one of the NFL’s most talented and mercurial players. Several people have asked if we could bring back the Friday Night Open Thread. I had moved the event to Saturday morning, but after minimal success John Stallworth Jersey , I decided to bring it back to Friday night — with a slight twist.I liked the Saturday Six-Pack theme, so I decided to just take the six questions and move them to Friday night. Say hello to Friday Night Six-Pack of Steelers Questions and open thread! The rules haven’t changed...Quick rundown of the ground rules.I’ll ask at least four questions strictly related to the Steelers. The rest of the questions could be about anything.Be respectful.Have fun talking about the Black-and-gold.That’s it! With that out of the way, it’s time to get this party started. Hey, don’t act like you’ve never done a little Friday night drinking. Here goes:1. Who wins the following games:Cleveland @ Tampa BayNew Orleans @ BaltimoreCincinnati @ Kansas City2. Are you now a believer in the Steelers? If not, explain what would need to take place before you believe again. 3. OVER/UNDER number of TD passes Patrick Mahomes has vs. the Bengals: 34. Predict the winner of the Steelers’ next three games:Week 8 - vs. ClevelandWeek 9 - at BaltimoreWeek 10 - vs. Carolina (TNF)5. Clearly fines don’t change Vontaze Burfict’s behavior. If you were Roger Goodell, and try to be as unbiased as possible, what would your punishment for Burfict be? Explain your reasoning.6. The trade deadline is looming. If you were to draw up a REALISTIC trade, who would be coming and going? No matter what, always remember...HERE WE GO STEELERS!PODCASTS

The goal is to give readers a handy spot to check the Redskins beat writers & bloggers, and national sports journalists to keep up on the latest news about the Redskins, the NFL, and sports in general, along with a sprinkling of other stuff.NFL News twitter feed:Tweets from https://twitter.com/HunterLoganX/lists/nfl-rumors-and-reportersRedskins twitter feed:Tweets from https://twitter.com/HunterLoganX/lists/beat-writersAn under-the-radar Redskin: LB Dadi Nicolas I saw the press release when it was sent out; I even copied it and pasted it into a comment somewhere on Hogs Haven at the time:I didn’t pay much attention to it.The bottom-of-the-roster churn during training camp usually doesn’t mean much to me — the 90th guy on the roster being changed out seems hardly noteworthy once camp is underway.(Heck, we’ve had two other roster moves since this one was announced — the team added LB Cassanova McKinzy & DL Dante Sawyer and cut LB Alex McAlister & DL Tavaris Barnes.)But during the game against the Patriots, the radio crew of Larry Michaels, Chris Cooley and Doc Walker highlighted that Dadi Nicolas was in the game in the first half, and mentioned that he was another Va Tech alumnus. He made a couple of notable plays during the game, which got me intrigued.Who is this guy?Well Sammy Baugh Jersey , it turns out that this isn’t his first NFL rodeo, so to speak.BackgroundNicolas is yet another NFL player who was born in Haiti, but grew up in the U.S., in Florida. He only started playing football as a high school senior, and then enrolled at Virginia Tech.Following a redshirt freshman year, he played in 10 games as a sophomore, but started every game in his junior year.He lost a lot of his senior year to a broken left hand, but was projected as a late round pick for the draft. He was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 6th round of the 2016 draft.MeasurablesWhat happened at Kansas City?Nicolas, who might’ve been seen as a practice squad candidate, was actually active for 11 games that season, though his only entry into the stat sheet was a pass defended.Arrowhead Pride described his role on the team in 2016 this way:At the end of the season, he was seriously injured Earnest Byner Jersey , and was placed on injured reserve on January 4, 2017 after suffering a ruptured patellar tendon. The article and comments on the Arrowhead Pride website generally reflect that fans had high hopes for his development, and — while his 2016 contributions wouldn’t necessarily be hard to replace — they saw him as a player with the ability to grow into a consistent contributor from the linebacker position.Going into the 2017 season, Nicolas was placed on the physically unable to perform list, and didn’t see the field during the season. In May this year, just over three months ago, Nicolas’ former GM, John Dorsey tried to acquire him for the Browns, according to NFL.com.However two days later, the trade was called off and voided without an explanation given from either team. Nicolas was waived by the Chiefs days later. From there, as a new free agent, Nicolas signed with the Seattle Seahawks in May only to later be released that same month.Dadi becomes a RedskinAs we’ve already seen Dustin Hopkins Jersey , the Redskins announced on the 1st of August that Nicolas had been signed.Early reports gave a concise summary of Big Dadi’s career to date:How does he fit on the team?Nicolas appears to be a good, if low-key signing by the Redskins. He’s a versatile linebacker who is still developing his game, and who appears to have decent pass rush skills. He is an experienced special-teamer, and, with just 13 NFL games on his resume, can be stashed on the practice squad to continue his development and provide protection against late-season injuries.I looked through the play-by-play for the first pre-season game againt New England (which just ended) and counted Nicolas as being credited with 3 tackles. He seemed to me to play pretty well, though I’m no kind of analyst. With the number of players in front of him (he’s probably behind Pete Robertson on the depth chart), Nicolas probably isn’t going to be on the 53 in Week 1 against the Cardinals, but he looks like a very strong candidate for a practice squad spot, and it would only take an injury or two to see him on the field in burgundy and gold in December.

and zero cents of guaranteed money over the next three years. Instead Justin Ellis Jersey , he’ll get $30 million, fully guaranteed.Per a source with knowledge of the terms of the looming contract restructuring, the Raiders will guarantee $30 million of Brown’s future payout. Also, the total amount he was due to earn through 2021 will increase from $38.925 million to $50.125 million. There are multiple ways to assess the new deal. Brown will make $16.7 million per year in hard dollars over the next three seasons. But when the $11.2 million is added to the $68 million in new money that Brown received two years ago from the Steelers, the new-money average on the entire deal spikes from $17 million to $19.8 million.Brown also can trigger $4 million in incentives, which would be paid in 2020 and 2021. If earned Rodney Hudson Jersey , he’ll receive an extra $15.2 million over the next three years, and the new-money average of the deal he signed with Pittsburgh in 2017 will be $20.8 million.Regardless of how the cat is skinned, Brown had made $33.79 million over the last two years and he was due to make $38.925 million, with no guarantees. That number has now gone up by $11.2 million, with $30 million of the $50.125 million he’ll make over the next three seasons now fully guaranteed. It’s not a bad outcome for a guy who was tied to the Steelers for three more seasons, and who presumably had no leverage to either demand a trade or finagle a new deal. No trades can become official until the start of the new league year on Wednesday Lamarcus Joyner Jersey , so Antonio Brown hasn’t been traded yet and a report on the machinations that led to an agreement sending him to the Raiders includes word that things almost fell apart on Saturday.Albert Breer of SI.com reports that the deal was “on the verge of crumbling” as the Raiders spoke to Brown’s agent Drew Rosenhaus about the new contract that Brown was looking for as part of any deal. It’s not clear what the sticking point was, but the end result was agreement on a trade and on a new deal with $30 million in guaranteed money.Rosenhaus appeared on NFL Network Sunday and confirmed the timing of the start to talks with the Raiders. He said that Raiders General Manager Mike Mayock drove a hard bargain in the first high-profile move since leaving the world of television to take the job.The expected deal to Oakland came after a near agreement with Buffalo was sidelined by Brown’s contract desires. Philadelphia and Washington also reportedly put in calls on Friday after the Buffalo deal was set aside, although Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that talks with Philly never got serious.

Snap Counts show the Steelers utilizing the two TE set to dominate the Falcons In Week 5 the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offense was looking for consistency across the board. With the desire to get back to the running game Dan McCullers Jersey , and a more balanced approach to their offense, running the football and not falling behind early were paramount. When the Steelers wanted to run the football, they did so with one of their favorite formations, the two tight end set. Since Vance McDonald has returned to normal action, he and Jesse James have been used with great frequency. Without getting into the logistics of the formation, it gives the offense a tremendous amount of options. The run, and the pass are readily available every time the ball is snapped. Taking a look at total snap counts, the Steelers’ used both McDonald (37 snaps for 61%) and James (36 for 59%) a great deal to help add more blockers for James Conner as he tallied another 100 yard game with two rushing touchdowns. In fact, the Steelers were even able to get their third tight end, Xavier Grimble, into the mix by playing 10 total snaps in the game. The Steelers have always valued the tight end position, especially players who both run and block well, and there is a clear difference between Conner’s performance on the ground when the team deploys these offensive sets, compared to the alternative. I am very confident the Steelers will utilize this same offensive approach vs. the Bengals in Week 6 to help neutralize their pass rush, yet also give them options to exploit the middle of the field and let their playmakers find space along the perimeter. Here are some more nuggets from the past week’s Snap Totals:Some talked about Roosevelt Nix’s play in the offense, but it might have just been a mirage. Nix played just 8 snaps on offense vs. the Falcons. After Ryan Switzer was used frequently vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Week 3 win, his playing time on offense has decreased over the next three weeks. Against the Falcons he registered just 4 snaps.James Washington has continued to see a great deal of snaps as the team’s No. 3 receiver (35 in total on Sunday), yet hasn’t made an impact. The Steelers will need him to start making plays to really open up the offense.Could we be seeing the making of the Steelers’ future safety tandem for years to come? For the second straight game, both Terrell Edmunds and Sean Davis have played in 100% of defensive snaps. This week it was a total of 72.Mike Hilton’s presence was felt on the field in a big way, likely because he played a lot. The Steelers used a large number of sub packages against the Atlanta offense, and Hilton made his 55 snaps (76%) count. The ILB rotation between L.J. Fort and Tyler Matakevich was not as evenly split as most thought after the game. Matakevich registered 41 snaps, with Fort just 27.The Artie Burns and Coty Sensabaugh rotation continues, not sure why the coaching staff feels rotating is better than sticking with one player, but Burns notched 41 snaps to Sensabaugh’s 31.Check out the complete snap totals in the chart below, and if you can’t see the chart due to being on a mobile device Xavier Grimble Jersey , CLICK HERE to find those numbers. Just a few days ago I wrote an article about how the longer the Steelers don’t make a change at Defensive Coordinator, the less likely it is Keith Butler will be relieved of his duties at the position.Needless to say, fans weren’t happy, not with the article, but because they want change. The Steelers will be able to tout change heading into 2019, but hardly at significant positions. So far, Outside Linebackers coach Joey Porter and Running Backs coach James Saxon have both been removed from their duties. That’s it.Fans are still holding out hope Butler will be told he is no longer needed, but according to recent reports, like this one from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, it isn’t likely to happen.Per the report, Mike Tomlin and Keith Butler had their end-of-season meeting, and it was labeled as “productive”. Now, for fans this term would be used by Tomlin handing Butler his termination papers and showing him to the nearest exit of the facility. But for the team, it likely means Butler won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.Butler does have one year left on his current contract with the Steelers, and if they give him one more year at the defensive helm to improve, and he doesn’t, they simple can not renew his contract. While the rest of the NFL doesn’t abide by these principles, it has shown up on more than on occasion in Pittsburgh, most notably with former offensive coordinator Todd Haley. While things could still change, Butler’s return means there is only one coaching position to fill on the defensive side of the ball, and that would be at the Outside Linebackers coach position. Butler has plenty of experience in this area, considering he was the linebackers coach for years under Dick LeBeau. Other than that, not much will change within the coaching staff, which makes fans wonder if anything will change on the field...

When you follow a football team for as long as I have the Steelers—39 years and counting (certainly not trying to impress with my fan “credentials”)—you get a sense of where it is at at any given time during the season. Of course Zach Gentry Pittsburgh Steelers Jersey , you didn’t need 39 years of following a team to know Pittsburgh was in a sweet little spot as it traveled to Baltimore to take on the Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium on Sunday. Winners of three straight, the Steelers didn’t just right the ship after their 1-2-1 start, they looked very impressive in doing so—and on both sides of the ball, for good measure. Yeah, sure, but the Ravens were the team that came into Heinz Field just five weeks earlier and handed Pittsburgh its third non-win in four games with a very methodical 26-14 road win on Sunday Night Football. In football—in most sports, really—the match-up makes the match, so why would things be different this time around—even if the Steelers were rolling and the Ravens were reeling? Because, as I said just last week, a match-up also comes down to when the match is played, and the Steelers have figured some things out since that unfortunate performance on September 30. It showed in the Steelers’ balanced attack on offense that included 282 yards through the air and 113 on the ground. It showed on third and fourth downs, where Pittsburgh was a very impressive 11 of 17. It once again showed in the protection afforded to quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who was only sacked once all day—and that came at the end of the game when taking a sack was preferableto throwing an incomplete pass that would have left the Ravens with way more than the 44 seconds they had to try a last-gasp attempt to get downfield and tie the score. It showed in time of possession, where the Steelers’ kept its always suspect until further notice defense off the field for 36:29. Pittsburgh’s offensive attack may have started a little slow, with its first possession lasting six plays and resulting in zero points. But the next two possessions netted 21 plays, 136 yards and 14 points, which played a huge role in establishing a 14-6 halftime lead. As for the defensive effort, while there may have been a few too many penalties—especially of the pass interference variety—it was all you could ask for, considering the Ravens only totaled 269 yards and foundthe end zone just once on the day. Keith Butler’s unit didn’t harassquarterback Joe Flacco the entire afternoon, but the pressure was consistent and played a big part in holding Baltimore to just four conversions on 13 attempts on third and fourth downs. Despite being slight road underdogs, to reiterate, you just had the sense the Steelers would take the action to Baltimore on Sunday and control things from beginning to end. And that’s exactly what happened. The victory improved the Steelers’ record to 5-2-1 on the year, while Baltimore dropped its third straight to fall to 4-5. The Steelers are now at the halfway point of their 2018 campaign, and while it’s still relatively early, they certainly look like the team destined to win the AFC North yet again. That all remains to be seen, of course, but the Steelers are clearly in a pretty sweet spot right now, and what they did to the Ravens on Sunday seemed pretty predictable at kickoff. In case you didn’t know Zach Gentry Jersey 2019 , the Steelers and Antonio Brown are on the outs. This has happened before between the two parties—the fights, the disagreements, the hurt feelings—but the issues were always resolved. However, unlike real-life couples who vow to never go to bed angry at one another, the Steelers and their star wide receiver have spent many nights—weeks, actually—not only angry at each other, but engaging in the old silent treatment--at least the star receiver has.Brown is incommunicado with his employer at the moment, but, gosh darn it, he’s vowed to come out with his side of the story One. Of. These. Days. For their part, the Steelers don’t seem to be too emotionally distraught over Brown’s latest reason for giving them the old silent treatment, and it has been reported that parting ways with him via trade is something the organization is seriously considering. I get it, I really do. I’m getting fed up with Brown’s antics, too. Of course, I never thought these antics would tempt the Steelers to get rid of him, a legacy player, someone who is already one of the greatest in team history. But, then again, I don’t have to live with Brown. I don’t have to work with Brown. And, perhaps, most importantly, I don’t have to reason with Brown on a seemingly endless basis. The Steelers owners, general manager, coaches and players must do all of these things, which is why they may be as willing to part ways with Brown as your average Facebook poster who says “Get rid of/fire him!” without really worrying about the consequences. And the consequences of parting ways with Brown may be huge. Sure, you’re losing a constant distraction, but you’re also losing the greatest receiver in the game. Sure, you might bet your jollies off watching a frustrated Brown fall to pieces on a totally horrible Jets team. But would you get your jollies off watching the likes of Eli Rogers and the totally unproven James Washington try to replace him? This is just a guess but probably not—not unless you have a different idea of what getting your jollies off means. They say you can’t win with a player like Brown Black Zach Gentry Jersey , but I don’t buy that for a second. As far as I’m concerned, there are few players in team history more clutch in big moments than No. 84, and the number of times he’s come through with either a big catch or a big touchdown are just too numerous to document in this little article. But, again, I don’t have to live with Brown. Idon’t have to deal with a potential volcano erupting in 2019 and doing more damage to the Steelers Super Bowl chances than inserting Eli Rogers into the lineup ever could. So if you have to trade Brown, trade him, but, damn it, you better make it right. Apparently, the 49ers—particularly Jerry Rice—would love to have Antonio Brown come to their organization and catch passes from handsome Jimmy Garoppolo. Fine, but if I’m the Steelers, I want San Francisco’s premium first-round draft pick. None of this second-round pick business. As my brother tells me in every text involving a potential trade in whatever sport, “You gotta give to get.” Damn right, you do. As much as you might want to see Brown go, the chances of the Steelers being better off without him are pretty slim if they don’t get fair value in return. To sort of give what I said earlier a different twist, YOU don’t have to live with Antonio Brown. You don’t have to work with Antonio Brown. You don’t have to reason with Antonio Brown. And since you insist on putting your entire heart and soul into cheering for the Pittsburgh Steelers, you probably aren’t too eager to see a depleted edition in 2019. Therefore, shipping Brown off for anything below a first-round pick (and even that might be too low if the first-round pick belongs to a playoff team) is simply out of the question.Fortunately, unlike the fans, the Steelers aren’t in the business of making rash decisions. They are, however, in the business of winning. And if they don’t trade Brown away this offseason, they’ll still have the services of one of the NFL’s best play-makers next regular season. How will that work after everything that’s gone down? It’s way too early to know at this point. It’s amazing how a heart-to-heart conversation can really clearthe air and make things right. Speaking of making things right, if the Steelers really are thinking of shipping Brown off to the highest bidder, well, they damn well better make sure it’s the highest bidder. I’m certainly not in the business of watching inferior Steelers football in 2019.

Scouting the Broncos ahead of Raiders week two match-up in Denver Familiar Faces in Rival PlacesFormer Raiders offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave is in his second year as the offensive coordinator for the Broncos and is already on his second starting quarterback. Musgrave is a solid OC and puts the Broncos offense in position to make plays. In their season opener against the Seahawks this Broncos team employed nearly a perfect 50/50 run versus pass play call while amassing 470 total yards. They ran the ball 32 times for 146 yards Karl Joseph Jersey , and they passed the football 39 times completing 25 passes for 329 yards. Not too shabby. The OffenseCase Keenum is the new face under center for the Denver Broncos in a move that showed the complete lack of faith in former top pick QB Paxton Lynch. Despite a career year in which the journeyman veteran led the team to the NFC Championship game, the Vikings made an executive decision to sign Kirk Cousins and let Keenum walk.Keenum was hot and cold against the Seahawks. He completed 25 of 39 passes for 329 yards and 3 TD’s against a Ken Norton Jr. led Seahawk defense. He also threw 3 INT’s against that Norton led defense. You know, the same guy who was fired after his Raiders defense set a record by going 10 weeks without an interception. Not such an accomplishment, even if it was the great Earl Thomas III, fresh off a camp holdout and with just a week of practice under his belt. The safeties will have numerous opportunities to step in front of wide receivers and steal passes, because one thing Keenum doesn’t do well is look off the safety. He has a habit of locking in on his receivers and makes his intentions with the football known. Emmanuel Sanders and Demaryius Thomas have been the Broncos receiver duo since 2014. Last season wasn’t particularly productive up to either of their standards. Much of that had to do with stopgap QB Trevor Siemian throwing them the ball.Against the Seahawks, Sanders caught 10 passes for 135 yards including a beautiful catch and sideline toe tap combined with 43 yard run, capped off with a front flip into the end zone for a touchdown. Thomas, didn’t miss out on the party as he came down with six receptions for 63 yards and TD.The receivers will be a factor that the Raiders must have a plan for. A route tactician in Sanders, a big physical monster in Thomas, along with talented rookie Courtland Sutton. The Raiders have the defensive backs to match up well with the Broncos. What will be imperative once again is the Raiders linebacking corp be quick to cover curl to flats. Also worth noting, Musgrave loves to draw up passing plays against cover-2 defense. Choosing to launch attacks on the safeties by forcing them to make a hi-lo decision. Philip Lindsay and Royce Freeman are a young prototypical thunder and lightning combination. The 5’8” Shilique Calhoun Jersey , 190-pound Lindsay is the scat back who took a 19-yard screen pass to the house last week. He also split carries with the 6’, 229-pound Freeman. They ran for the exact same carries and yards17 times for 51 yards (4.7 ypc). These two backs will be featured and ran early as well as often. Musgrave is a believer in using the run to set up the pass. It’s always Miller time on defenseI don’t know how Von Miller didn’t win AFC Defensive player of the week. He sacked the Russell Wilson 3 times, caused 2 fumbles, and danced all over the Seahawks backfield. Miller is the unquestioned leader of this defense and they will go as he goes. Fifth overall pick Bradley Chubb showed promise but they ask him to drop back in coverage and he really shouldn’t. Chubb wasn’t asked to do much pass coverage at NC State, but he is now. Chubb has all the talent in the world and it would provide the Broncos with the luxury of two dominant edge rushers at a fraction of the price of $141/M with $90/M guaranteed. I’m just saying. The defensive backfield was once the most dominant unit in all of football. Now they are a shell of their former selves much like the now former Legion of Boom. Chris Harris Jr. is a great corner who gives receivers fits, Bradley Roby is a question mark, to be honest. He needs to have a good season now that he’s in the spotlight and no longer the third guy. Adding wily veteran Adam ‘Pac Man’ Jones is a risky move that could help pay off. Russell Wilson, in between running for his life, and avoiding pass rushers was able to complete 19 passes for 298 yards 3 TD’s and 2 INT’s. The GameplanOpportunities for Derek Carr and Amari Cooper to reunite and reform AC/DC will be plentiful. The Broncos gave up touchdown passes of 51 yards to Tyler Lockett, 15 yards to Will Dissly (3 catches 105 yards 1 TD, from a primarily blocking tight end), and 20 yards to 34-year-old Brandon Marshall. To handicap Wilson further Connor Cook Jersey , Doug Baldwin his favorite target was injured early in the first half and did not return. Head coach Jon Gruden has called out his quarterback and let it be known early he won’t be handling missed opportunity with kid gloves. An educated guess would suggest that Cooper, Jordy Nelson, and recently re-signed Martavis Bryant will get many looks this week. Dissly was targeted five times, catching three passes; one for a touchdown, one that narrowly missed, and another. Jared Cook is coming off a career night and a franchise record-setting performance, could this be part deux? Should the Broncos commit Brandon Marshall the linebacker to help the safety, it will further compromise a run defense which has been suspect as of late. The run game was abandoned early against the Rams, it was abandoned and Carr was without the threat of a play-action pass nearly all game. Lynch and the offensive line came out cracking pads and taking it to the Rams early, then it just went away. This offensive line must impose their will on the Broncos’ defense and maintain the edge in time of possession which won’t be an easy task. Monday they officially re-signed Harris. The 8-year NFL veteran return man brings an invaluable savvy as both a return man and as a gunner. What he showed in his first season in Oakland was that he can make uncommon heads-up plays on the fly. Two plays in particular stand out from last season. One against the Chiefs in which he stepped out of bounds at the one to keep a ball from bouncing into the end zone, resulting in a penalty on the punting team that gave the Raiders the ball at the 40.The other was waiting for the Broncos’ coverage team to bat the ball back to keep it from being a touchback, scooping it up and returning it 99 yards for the score. He twice earned AFC Special Teams Player of the Week last season and averaged an NFL best 14.1 yards per punt return which is the second best single-season mark in franchise history. For his career, Harris has played in 103 games for the Cowboys, Giants, and Raiders. As a returner, he has totaled 159 kickoff returns for 4,055 yards (25.5 avg.) and one touchdown in addition to 177 punt returns for 1,805 (10.2 avg.) and four scores. On offense, Harris has posted 76 receptions for 867 yards and eight touchdowns. Follow @LeviDamien
